ABSTRACT: IBM's newest version of DB2 for AIX and OS/2 incorporates a number of extensions designed to bring users many of the benefits of object technology while enabling them to leverage their existing investments in relational technology. This article explores these object extensions, which include support for large objects of up to 2 GB each, user-defined data types, user-defined functions, triggers, event alerters, recursive queries, and support for object-oriented programming languages.
ABSTRACT: Many users struggling with the problems of heterogeneous database environments are turning to data access middleware, such as IBM's DataJoiner, as a solution. DataJoiner, an AIX-based product, offers client applications transparent access to current data stored in a variety of local and remote data sources, including DB2/MVS, VSAM, IMS, Oracle7, Sybase SQL Server, and others. This article explores the capabilities of this product, discussing such subjects as optimization, location transparency, and SQL language support.
